How does your kitchen rate?

Are you thinking about re-doing your kitchen or dining space?  Honestly answer these questions below before you begin:

Before
After
 1) Does the layout of your space work when you have more than 4 people?

2) Is there enough counter space where you need it most?

3) Is the space arranged so "people traffic" is directed away from the cooking activites?

4) Do your cabinets feature time-saving accessories such as roll-outs, divided drawers and built-in trash bins?

5) Is there enough cabinet shelf space?

6) Is there a place to sort recyclables?

7) Are your appliances energy efficient? Are they up-to-date for cooking, cleaning and food preservation?

8) Do your smoke detectors go off when you are cooking? Do you have proper ventilation?

9) Does your kitchen look like it came out of a 1970's sitcom?

10) Is there room for comfortable, casual dining and conversation in the room?

If you answered "no" more often than you answered "yes" -- you may want to consider extending or re-designing your kitchen or dining space.  Curio Kitchens and Baths can help!

Make your Remodeling Project a Breeze

Are you ready to remodel your kitchen or bathroom?  Remember, it's a journey, not a race. Curio Kitchens & Baths would like to help make your remodeling project as easy as possible.  Here are some quick tips we recommend:

Plan your Project

Kitchen Remodel - Before
  • If you want to have fond memories of your old kitchen or bathroom, take pictures before, during and after the remodeling process. Not only will you have pictures to last a lifetime, but you'll be able to see the transformation as it takes place.
  • If you are having new cabinets installed, be sure to have a designated, safe place to store them before the installation process begins.
  • Don't forget about Fido! When construction begins, you'll want to keep your furry friend safe.  Make sure to have a convenient, comfortable spot for your pet, such as a kennel or a place in your house for your pet to stay during construction.

  Prep for your Project

Kitchen Remodel - After
  • Pack up all kitchen or bathroom belongings well in advance.  Don't forget to label boxes and mark fragile items.
  • Move all pictures, mirrors and furniture away from walls of adjacent rooms. Any vibrations from the construction could cause damage.
  • Dust is unavoidable during construction, so be sure to cover everything.
  • Use plastic sheeting and tape to seal off doorways into other rooms.

The Great Debate: Porcelain or Ceramic Tile?

Are you looking to enhance the beauty of your kitchen with tile flooring?  Here are some quick tips to think about before you decide which one is right for you.

The basic differences...

Porcelain Tile   -  Refined and purified, dense; does not require sealing; made up of white clay

Ceramic Tile -  Less dense; may require sealing; made up of red, brown, white clay, sand material and water

When selecting the tile be particular and ask for the PEI factor and the MoH factor.  PEI (Porcelain Enamel Institute) refers to the tile's scratch resistance. The amount of resistance depends on where the tile will be used. For example, tile being used for a back splash should have a PEI factor of 1 or 2, whereas tile being used for commercial purposes should have a PEI factor of 4 or 5.

The MoH factor measures how hard or soft a mineral is. The MoH scale ranges from 1 to 10, with 10 (diamond) being the hardest. Because the majority of the dirt and sand that gets tracked through a home is ranked between 3 and 7, your tile should have a MoH factor of at least 7.

When you need assistance choosing tile for your next home remodeling project, contact Curio Kitchens & Baths at (413) 783-0913 for our expert advice. We'll work with you to make sure your kitchen or bathroom project runs smoothly.
